On June 22nd, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that Europe must prepare immediately for the complete severance of Russian gas exports this winter, urging governments to take measures to cut demand and keep aging nuclear power stations open.

As a response to recent developments, European countries have taken emergency measures to reduce gas demand. The cornerstone to reducing Europe’s reliance on imported fossil fuels relies on RePowerEU, the blocks’ common energy policy which was announced this past May. The plan aims to make Europe independent from Russian oil and gas before 2030 and to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources to reach the 2050 commitment.
