Alantra is pleased to announce that Capol GmbH, a business unit of Freudenberg Chemical Specialties, SE & Co. KG (FCS), has acquired Colarôme Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of natural food ingredients. The transaction closed on October 2, 2017. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Based in Saint Hubert, Canada, Colarôme is a privately held producer of natural color pigments, flavors and natural vanilla extracts used by food and nutraceutical companies. The company was founded in 1998 and employs 17 people. The company’s significant intellectual property will offer Capol attractive growth opportunities.

Capol is a leading supplier of specialty ingredients for the confectionery industry. The company specializes in anti-sticking, glazing, and polishing agents used to treat surfaces when making gums, jellies, sugar dragées, chocolate coated centers and other sweets.

“Additives for the food industry are an attractive market segment in the long term,” said Hanno D. Wentzler, President and CEO of FCS, in a company statement. “Having Colarôme now in our portfolio, we will be able to strategically develop this business segment. Both Capol and Colarôme have very similar business models, so we expect a swift integration into Capol.”

“We are pleased to have assisted FCS with this transaction which will cement Capol’s position as a leading player in confectionery coatings,” said Joseph Downing, Managing Director & Partner with Alantra and head of the firm’s Food & Nutritional Ingredients Practice. “Colarôme’s focus on natural colors is unique and will contribute significantly to the future growth of the company,” he concluded.
